Bubble Gum

The Bubblegum Bubble Blowing Contest. Your Shot at Fame and Glory?

Sure, you really need all that great recognition you’d get by winning the big contest at the local 4th of July fireworks show, right?

But the fact is, contests have been much bigger than that. Some have been sponsored by large bubblegum companies and have given some pretty major prizes. There has been some pretty big recognition earned by blowing large bubbles.

Of course this is not a topic for everyone. But if you’re someone who loves to blow big bubblegum bubbles, or one of the millions who have fond memories of doing it then read on. Have we got something for you!

How could you ever get famous blowing bubblegum bubbles?

Some very talented bubble blowers have not only asked the same thing, they’ve figured out how to do it. More importantly, they knew many other people were asking the same thing, and they have provided them the opportunity to do it for themselves.

If you have ever dreamed of gum blowing glory, or if you are reading this and thinking you have bubble blowing talent, your chance has arrived!

See, when it came to achieving fame and glory from blowing huge bubblegum bubbles, there was pretty much only one game in town. That was to claim the Guinness World Record for blowing the largest bubblegum bubble. Just one problem. There was only one spot for that which happened to be occupied for the last 29 years by the greatest bubble blower of all time. In other words, it was just about impossible.

Until quite recently, the bubblegum blowing world could pretty much be summed up like this. Either you were Susan Montgomery Williams (Chews Suzy), the GWRH, or you were Joyce Samuels (The Gum Blowin’ Granny), the GWRH for blowing the largest bubblegum bubble from the nose, or you were the winner of a large bubblegum company contest, which really wasn’t much of an indication that you really were one of the greatest bubble blowers but it did earn you a pretty nice prize. Otherwise you weren’t really too well known at all.

That doesn’t mean there weren’t other extraordinarily talented bubble blowers out there. It means that, even though they were worthy of it, they simply weren’t getting much recognition for what they were doing. And they set out to do something about it.

What happened was a group was formed in protest to a certain rule the some felt restricted access to the Guinness World Record. The rule was that, in order to blow a qualifying GWR bubble, only three pieces of bubblegum could be used. The group had ample personal experience that showed that larger bubbles could be blown when more than three pieces of gum was used. They felt the rule was unnecessarily arbitrary, and began to raise the issue with Ms. Williams.

After a brief dustup, it was acknowledged that both sides had valid points. Ms. Williams had always blown her bubbles under Guinness rules, because that was what it took to claim their record, but it couldn’t be denied that bigger bubbles could be blown using more than three pieces. Soon a truce was reached and from that sprung a new group called the Blowers Of Mega Bubbles, The BOMB Squad. This consisted of Susan Montgomery Williams and Joyce Samuels, and unlimited number of pieces advocates Dr. Enaught T. Wiseham and Earl (The Gum Bubble Coach) Hartwell. The goal of the group was to create the future of bubblegum based on the vision of it’s creator and that which they knew to be correct. That is, the most important thing about bubblegum, actually the reason it was created, was to do one thing. To blow the biggest bubbles possible, the biggest bubbles the world had ever seen.

Of course those wishing to blow the biggest bubble face tremendous competition. Just how tremendous could be summed up through Ms. William’s motto “29 years and still looking for some GUMpetition,” a motto that had to be rewritten every year. As far as her record is concerned, that GUMpetition has never materialized. When you consider Ms. Williams’ unbelievable run, it’s easy to see why just about everyone else was locked out of their share of bubblegum fame and glory. There was only so much to go around and she pretty much had a lock on it. There was only one thing to do, and that was to create more opportunity and ways for people to achieve it without having to break Ms. Williams seemingly unbeatable record. So The BOMB Squad went to work and created a very interesting solution.

To commemorate bubble gum’s 80th birthday, they announced on 8-8-08 the beginning of The BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, what they deemed to be the world’s greatest bubblegum bubble blowing contest. What they did was develop the kind of contest they would have liked to see in all their years of bubble blowing, different in many ways from any other contest that had ever existed.

Many of the biggest contests had been put on by large bubblegum companies, which was a good thing for some bubble blowers but not all of them. The reason why was that they had restrictions placed on them, some of which had the chilling effect of locking out many of the greatest bubble blowers. For example, some wouldn’t allow bubble blowers older then a certain age, which would disqualify all of The BOMB Squad and many others. Others would allow only a certain amount of gum, which would restrict bubble size. And they all, as far as we know, limited the bubblegum used to the manufacturer’s brand. Also, the contests were normally held in the United States, which would remove competition from the rest of the world. And finally, they were normally once a year, if that often. If you couldn’t do it in one year, perhaps you could do it the next, if you were both still young enough and the contest still existed, which was not a sure bet.

While it would be great to win a contest like this because of a fabulous prize you could win, the results were really only indicators that the winner could only beat the other entrants at the time of the contest and under the rules and conditions of the contest at the time.

The BOMB Squad wanted something vastly different. They wanted a contest that people would enter for the love of blowing mega bubbles, not for the love of winning an irrelevant prize. They wanted to create the first contest by serious bubble blowers for serious bubble blowers. One that would earn participants recognition for what they love to do. One where they could compete with others across the globe that they would otherwise possibly never even know had existed. One where the winner could say he is the world champion of bubblegum blowing because he had competed with some of the best in the world and beaten them.

The contest they created is unique from all others, and the contrast between theirs and other contests is stunning. They removed many limitations of the normal bubblegum company-sponsored contest. A United States-based contest? That wouldn’t do. This one had to go all the way. This would be a contest for all the world. A contest which is here today and (permanently) gone tomorrow? No way. This one would always, if possible, be going. If a person missed his chance at greatness today, he could always come back and claim it tomorrow. Or next month, or next year or 20 years from now, whenever. A contest the best bubble blowers couldn’t compete in? Forget it. If a bubblegum blower was 18 or older and had access to the internet, he could be in. A contest that had to be held on a certain date in a certain location? Nope. The BWC is 24/7/365, anywhere it could be reached. Doesn’t matter if it’s the happy new year celebration at Times Square, or a cold snowy foggy 3 am night in Siberia where the next closest person is 100 miles away. A contest where you had to use the sponsor’s gum of choice, and only a certain amount? No, the BWC is “bring your own weapon and as much of it as you need.” Does the BOMB Squad want you to be a cute little photogenic kid who will make their bubblegum look good? Heck no.

The only thing that matters is the size of your bubble. Big bubbles blown with bubblegum is all we care about. It’s the only thing that matters.Because that’s what bubblegum was created for and what has built it’s 80 year popularity. Big bubbles.

The BOMB Squad knows it and they know what it feels like to get fame and glory for doing it. They’ve set out to share that wonderful feeling with the bubblegum bubble blowing world, and to give them their chance to experience the sweet taste of bubble blowing success. And if you’re one of them or know someone who is, your chance is here. The BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP has come to life, and is waiting for you to bring your game. We invite you to come on over to our website, www.bubblegumheaven.com, and show us what it’s all about. And to grab your share of the fame and glory!
